My memories of school lunches, honestly, make me cringe. I recall packing a Wonderbread and Cheez Whiz sandwich in a Ziploc baggie for myself every day during 7th grade. That is, when I wasn’t using my babysitting money to buy a couple slices of pizza and some diet soda.
Sugar, white flour, cheese, aspartame, and a little food colouring were pretty well the entirety of my sustenance from ages 11-17. Ew.
I’d like to think that as a collective society, we now know better – and truly understand not only why we must feed children well, but also how to do so. The evidence says otherwise…
The chart above is from the USDA, and shows that nearly 15% of our calorie intake is from added sweeteners and 23% is from added fats. Not good.
Building healthy habits, including a love of healthy lunches, is a great way to do our part to change these statistics! I recently wrote an article for The Holistic Parent magazine outlining 7 things to always include in your children’s lunchbox.
I put together 4 bento boxes – like the one shown above – with delicious and healthy lunches for kids.
